About Charlie

Charlie Casserly was born and raised in Minneapolis, and grew up across the street from Lake Hiawatha. 

Charlie was a newspaper carrier for the morning Minneapolis Tribune in the early 1970s in the ward. His route was between 50th and 52nd Streets, and 30th Ave. and Woodlawn Blvd. He delivered to all his customers during the “Blizzard of the Century.” Charlie’s first job was icing doughnuts, filling bismarks, and completing orders at world-famous Mel-O-Glaze Bakery, a Minnehaha Parkway tradition on 28th Ave.

Education

Charlie is a product of Minneapolis schools. He attended both Minneapolis public and private schools throughout his youth. John Ericsson, St. Helena’s, South Parks, and Nokomis Jr. High.

Charlie attended Academy of the Holy Angels. He has B.A. in journalism, and an MBA in marketing from St. Thomas.

Career

In his professional career, Charlie has worked at Unisys, TV Guide and NFR Communications. Free-lance clients included Minnesota Sports, Skyway News, Hospital News Minnesota, and the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was Webmaster and financial news provider for the Minnesota Bankers Association public site. He developed websites for many community banks across Minnesota and gave presentations at many financial institution meetings. Charlie began working as a sole proprietor in 1999.

He is Online Content Coordinator for Minnesota Continuing Legal Education.

Management

Charlie is also the Executive Director of the Twin Cities Beach Blast, which brought back the Milk Carton Boat Races and Sandcastle Contest to Minneapolis in 2017!

Charlie worked with the Minneapolis Downtown Council on event management, volunteer coordination, and many other event duties. He managed hundreds of volunteers for the Aquatennial, Minneapolis’ official civic celebration, and for Target Holidazzle. Charlie was in the very first Holidazzle parade in 1992, and also served as Parade Manager in his many roles at the parade. Other management:

  • Aquatennial Volunteer Coordinator, 2002 – 2015, Target Fireworks, Star Tribune Beach Bash, [Milk Carton Boat Races & Sandcastle competitions], CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade and Block Party.

  • Hosted boat-building seminars in Minneapolis Park Board buildings and City Center

  • Performed out-reach to diverse community groups for volunteers

  • Minneapolis Aquatennial Block Party Volunteer Coordinator, 1996 – 2001

  • Alive After 5 Concert Manager, 1995 – 2011

  • Famous Dave’s Blues Festival Manager, 2005 – 2012

  • Hot Summer Jazz Festival Manager, 1997 – 2008.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves Playoff Rally Manager, 1998 – 2004 (3 events in 2004)

  • Minnesota Twins Playoff Rally Manager, 2004, 2006.

  • Holidazzle Hot Seats management, 2003 – 2013

Awards / Boards / Charities

  • Charlie was the founder and race director of the Autumn Daze 5K for five years, as a fund-raiser for the St. Helena fall festival. 

  • Charlie is a WCCO Good Neighbor award winner.

  • He often organizes volunteers for the annual Get In Gear race at Minnehaha Falls.

  • He chaired the Minneapolis Downtown Council’s volunteer committee in 1994, 2004 and 2009, and received the organization’s highest award twice, in 1996 and in 2005.

  • Honorary flag-raiser at Target Field in 2010.

  • Among other committees, Charlie served on the Downtown LRT Circulator Task Force, and the Minnesota Shopping Center Associations technology committee for years.
